Our Data Center

Here is a look at our IT Infrastructure and other fun facts from our department.

Luther Rice utilizes a comprehensive backup solution, ensuring daily backups for all servers, with most servers receiving four backups each day. These virtual backups allow our IT team to quickly restore the entire system either on the local server or in the cloud if necessary. For further information on our backup technology, please refer to Datto Siris.

Luther Rice’s data is securely stored on a robust onsite server and regularly synchronized with offsite servers located in Utah and Pennsylvania, each strategically positioned over 1,000 miles from our campus. To ensure data integrity and security, our servers undergo hourly backups.

Luther Rice is equipped with high-speed, redundant fiber optic circuits to ensure seamless internet connectivity. These two fiber optic services are strategically managed by a load balancer, which optimizes traffic distribution and ensures continuous high-speed internet access. This robust infrastructure guarantees that our students always experience reliable and efficient online services, enhancing their educational experience.

In our data center, we employ Microsoft Hyper-V with High Availability (HA). Multiple physical servers host over a dozen virtual servers, ensuring no downtime or performance impact even if a physical server is lost. The entire data center, including switches, network interfaces, servers, power supplies, main power, and fiber channel SAN, is redundant. Each hardware component has a backup in place, guaranteeing normal network performance even if one piece fails.

Our campus is equipped with a backup generator that activates within 3 seconds of a power failure, fully powering the data center in less than 10 seconds. Additionally, we have a battery backup system to provide protection in the event of a power outage and generator malfunction.
