Preparing your computer!

We're so glad you've joined the Luther Rice family!

As you embark on your educational journey, it’s essential to prepare your computer for seamless, online coursework. Whether you’re watching videos, taking exams, or writing papers, a well-configured computer enhances your learning experience.

Since each student’s computer varies in model, speed, memory, and operating system, customization for individual devices is impractical. However, we strongly recommend that all students follow the guidelines below to optimize their computer configuration.

Remember, a well-maintained computer ensures a smoother learning experience. Now, let’s get started! What type of device are you using to study at Luther Rice?”

Need a Device?

If you are looking for a new device to start your journey with, but don’t understand all the different options, please keep these specifications in mind when shopping!

  • RAM: 8 Gb or more (16Gb is recommended).
  • Storage: At least 50% available free space on your hard drive.
  • Screen size: 14″ or more
  • Operating System: Windows 10/11
(Note, Windows “S Mode” is not recommended.)

We do NOT recommend using Chromebooks, iPads, or Android tablets for your primary coursework device.

Windows Computer

Prepare Your Windows Device for your Online Education

  1. Windows Update:

    • Run Windows Update to ensure your operating system is up-to-date and all known bugs are patched. Microsoft releases new updates monthly.
  2. Antivirus Evaluation:

    • Verify that your antivirus software is both up-to-date and active.
    • While most computers have antivirus installed, it’s often expired and outdated. We recommend Webroot SecureAnywhere for comprehensive protection. Our CIO personally chooses Webroot for his own computers.
    • Although not our top choice, our CIO also approves of MalwareBytes (paid version only). Note that free antivirus versions are generally ineffective.
  3. Consider PcMatic:

    • Optionally, install PcMatic alongside Webroot Antivirus. Our CIO has trusted PcMatic for over 25 years.
    • PcMatic offers two options:
      • Subscription: Basic subscription at $50 per year for 5 devices.
      • Lifetime License: Priced at $150 for 5 devices.
    • PcMatic works on Windows, Apple, and Android devices.
  4. Browsers:

    • Download and install the latest version of Google Chrome. Microsoft Edge also works well with Moodle.
  5. Adobe Acrobat Reader:

    • Install Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing PDF documents.
  6. Word Processor:

For class assignments, you’ll need a good word processor.
    • We recommend Microsoft 365, available online and for free download while you’re an active student at Luther Rice.
    • Alternatively, consider OpenOffice, a free product, though we believe Mircrosoft365 to be the superior product.

Be sure to have a webcam suitable for Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor.

Mac Computer

Prepare Your MAC/Apple Computer for your Online Education

  1. Update macOS:
    • Ensure that your macOS is up-to-date by installing the latest updates.
    • After updating, restart your computer to apply the changes.
  2. Antivirus for Mac:

    • Contrary to the myth, Macs can indeed get viruses.
    • Evaluate your current antivirus software. We recommend Webroot SecureAnywhere for comprehensive protection against viruses and ransomware.
    • If you choose to install Webroot, uninstall any other antivirus products currently running on your Mac.
    • Next, consider purchasing and installing PcMatic – this is in addition to Webroot Antivirus. PcMatic is a product that our CIO has used for more than 25 years. It is installed on every computer at Luther Rice. This is optional, but if your computer is running slowly, this can really help you. PCMatic is available in two options:
      • Subscription: The Basic subscription costs $50 per year and covers 5 devices.
      • Lifetime License: The Lifetime license is priced at $150 for 5 devices.
PCMatic is compatible with PCs and mobile devices running Windows, Apple, and Android operating systems.
  3. Browsers:

    • Google Chrome: Download and install the latest version of Google Chrome for optimal browsing.
    • Safari Configuration: By default, Safari does not allow all cookies. To access our online curriculum (including videos), enable all cookies or all third-party cookies in your Safari settings. You can find instructions by searching “How to enable Safari cookies.”
  4. Adobe Acrobat Reader:

    • Download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing PDF documents.
  5. Word Processor:

    • For class assignments, you’ll need a good word processor.
    • We recommend Microsoft Office, which is available for free download and online use.

Remember, a well-prepared computer enhances your online learning experience!
